In the last 5 years I have moved a total of 8 times.
The first few times were total chaos if I’m being honest. But after that I figured out a few ways to make things go a little more smoothly.
The 4th time we moved I realized how much stuff we were just moving from place to place without actually unpacking. I’m not talking about a few boxes here and there. I am talking about a trailer load of stuff we were just hauling around with us, without any use for.
So, the first thing I started doing before we move is to have a purge.
Anything that has been sitting for an extended period of time and has no sentimental value, has to go. Toys, clothes, shoes, furniture, baby items, etc.
You can do this in a few ways. 1) Find someone who wants it (a family member or friend who could use it) 2)Have a moving sale 3)Donate the items to a local thrift store.
Another thing I do is to have a plan.
Planning in advance helps to alleviate last minute rushing and stress. Your plan could look something like this:
2 months before move: Start Purge
1.5 months before move: Get rid of purge stuff, Start categorizing items, make a list of how to pack, what, and when
1 month(and on): start packing things that aren’t needed

The last tool I have is keeping track of what you pack by category.
First, I made a list of categories and the items that go into each category.
Then, I made stickers to put on the boxes. Each sticker has a spot to put the category and a list of everything that is in the box. This takes a little more time, but beats digging through 8 boxes after the move trying to find one item. It’s also really helpful to be able to just take each item to it’s respective area.

(You can print the packing labels on regular paper and affix them with tape or you can print them on sticker paper. I use Maco Full Page Labels, which are relatively inexpensive for the amount you get AND you can use them for other projects.)
