I wrote a post not long ago for Birth to 1 month. Check it out here: Things You REALLY Need for Baby: Birth to 1 Month
As I explain in that post, I’ve had 4 of my own kids, not to mention taken care of multiple others so I’ve become somewhat of an expert in baby needs. Haha. There is just so much that first time moms buy that ultimately ends up going unused and I wanted to save you from some of that by giving you an idea of the things that you ACTUALLY need vs things that are nice to have but not necessary.
Things you will have to purchase on a regular basis for the first year:
Diapers and wipes
Formula( If using)
Breastmilk Storage (If using)
Lanolin (If using)
Breast Pads (If using, unless you have reusable ones)
Around 3 months you will want to purchase these necessities:
The only thing you really need to purchase around this age, besides the above necessities, are clothes. Baby outgrows clothing fast the first year of life, so having just a few items is not only easier on the wallet, but also ensures that baby will have a chance to wear them all.
The following clothing in 3-6 month size: 3+ Onesies, 5 Sleepers, 2-4 Outfits, and 5 Socks
Around 4 months you will want to purchase these necessities:
Feeding utensils (Spoons and Bowls)- This is only if you are planning on starting solids, sometimes it’s not the right time. Check out this post on starting solids with baby.
Baby Toys (a few small rattles, small stuffed animals, etc.)
Baby might need some new, bigger sized bottles at this point.
Not necessary, but convenient:
Highchair (Or a seat in which baby can sit upright with support)
Bibs (I DO suggest them though, feeding babies is MESSY!)
Teething toys (Some babies start teething around 4 months. You can check out this post to learn more about baby teething and some other ways to provide comfort to your little one.)
Around 6 months, you will want to purchase these necessities:
The following clothing in 6-9 month size: 3+ Onesies, 5 Sleepers, 2-4 Outfits, and 5 Socks
So there you have it. Can you think of anything else you would say is an absolute necessity for baby from 1-6 months? If so, let me know in the comments.
Also, here is a checklist, click to download.
